Something I wish would change in Chile (Post 8)

Imagen
Hi, For this course, this semester, this will be our last post. In this post you should write about something you wish would change (or be changed) in Chile. This could be something that people are generally unhappy about. It could be something that is a topic of the protests. Minimum word count: 200 I am going to write about the AFP system. I am at a point in my life when I really have to think about it. As a working inhabitant of Chile, I am enrolled in this system. I've been here very long--almost 20 years, so it's not feasible for me to leave and go back to the US because my pension there (Social Security) would be very low because I worked there last in 1991...long ago. The problem with the AFP system is that it isn't a real pension system. It's just money that you are obliged to save, to invest in an investment fund that is managed by an investment firm (that makes a lot of money doing this). You can start receiving monthly payments based on this money when y...

THEMED POST (Post 7)

Imagen
This themed post means that you can write about something you want to write about. Write about something that moves you, or interests you, or you are passionate about, or want to share. Word Count: 230 I am going to write about a city I feel very connected to. It is a partial hometown for me. Hamburg, Germany. My mom was from there, and my grandparents (and great-grandparents lived there, and I was partially raised by them, so I spent a lot of my childhood and youth there. Hamburg is a really special city. It has about 1,8 million inhabitants, and is Germany's second largest city. It is very distinctive from the rest of Germany for several reasons. It is a port city. In fact it is either the first or second biggest port in Europe. You can spend all day just travelling around the port seeing the ships, the wharfs, the canals, the warehouses, the port neighborhoods with bars and typical life of a port. Part of the public transport system is a "water bus" (boat) ...

My Post Graduate Studies (Post 6)

Imagen
Today you will write about your post-graduate studies. These are studies after you graduate from this institution now receiving your diploma. Maybe you want to get another Master's Degree, a Master's Degree, or a PhD... Maybe you don't, but imagine you did... What would you study? Why? Where? What would be the reason for this? What motivates you? Add any other relevant information. Word minimum: 220 My case might be a little complicated. I was one of those students who was interested in many things, and I had a couple of possibilities. As you know, I almost chose Geology/Paleontology as a major. However, I didn't. I have a Bachelor's Degree in International Relations, with a specialization in Central European Area Studies. This was an interdisciplinary major that focuses on a particular part of the world (for example: Western Europe, Latin America, East Asia, etc...) and has elements of History, Language, Economics, Political Science, and Geography. As part of it,...

MY FUTURE JOB (POST 5)

Imagen
Today we're going to write a post about our future job. The topic: My Future Job. In English, we don't really differentiate between the words profession, occupation, and job, so you can think of it as your profession. What do you think this job will be like? What will you focus on? What will you do? Why will you do it? Say anything you need to say about it. Minimum words: 210 My case is different. I have my job, and I don't want to change it. I am an English teacher. Since I have an MA in Linguistics, this is a logical choice for me, and I'm happy with it. While I was a student, and right after I got my BA, I had various jobs: I sold knives, I was a waiter, I renewed organization memberships over the phone, I worked in a bookstore, I was a billing investigator (I hated that job!)... I've done various jobs to get money to live. In an alternative universe, I might have become a geologist...specifically a paleontologist. I really liked these subjects in school, and...

A FASCINATING ANIMAL (POST 4)

Imagen
Today's post will focus on a fascinating animal. Choose an animal that you find interesting or that fascinates you. Say what is interesting about it, describe its habits, say anything that you think is important about it. Word count minimum: 200 I am going to write about the Komodo dragon. This reptile lives on an island in Indonesia called Komodo. It is the largest lizzard in the world since these "dragons" can grow up to 2,5 meters long including the tail. They look a bit like we imagine dinosaurs. I've seen them in a zoo, but never in their own habitat. I remember them just siting there and considering you, and not doing anything really interesting. However, I've seen them on nature programs and I've learned some things about them. Actually, these things are kind of terrible, so they're not nice or cute, but they are interesting. Komodo dragons are predators. They eat animals such as pigs or deer, or people if they can get them. They have a unique...

THE INTERNET (POST 3)

Imagen
Today's post is about the Internet, and how you use it. Mention: How and why you use it, how often, what role does it play in your life? How has it affected your life? What do you think of this? And anything else you want to say. Write at least 180 words. I remember first reading about the Internet in the mid 90s. It sounded like a curious and distant thing. I didn't use it, need it, and I knew nobody who had anything to do with it--at least they didn't mention it to me. My life was fine. I didn't feel like something was missing. I came to Chile in 2000, and my relationship with the Internet started. I got a job here as an academic coordinator/teacher, and this included a computer in an office. My contact to the Internet started. A co-worker said something about my email address, and I said "What's email?" Very quickly I started an email account, and started using the Internet a bit. It wasn't to hard for me since I knew how to type and use typewri...

THE BEST HOLIDAYS I'VE HAD (POST 2)

Imagen
For this blog post, you have a choice: The Best Holidays I've Had or A Really Great Concert I Saw. In both cases say why you enjoyed it, when and where it was, who you went with, and anything else you want to say. 170-word minimum. I had a really great vacation trip in 2017. I have had many nice trips and been to some concerts but because this one is fairly recent I will write about it. I went with my partner, and we decided to go in March, 2017 to Bogota and San Andres Island in Colombia. I had been to Colombia before (Cartagena de Indias and Santa Marta) and really enjoyed it, so it seemed like a good idea to go back. Bogota was nicer and more interesting than I thought. A city surounded by green mountains with a mix of modernity and colonial aspects. There are great things to visit: the free Botero Art Museum with his art, as well as the art of other artists that he collected, the Gold Museum with pre-Colomban artefacts, and more. Not far from the city, you can visit a town ...
