A FASCINATING ANIMAL (POST 4)

Today's post will focus on a fascinating animal. Choose an animal that you find interesting or that fascinates you. Say what is interesting about it, describe its habits, say anything that you think is important about it. Word count minimum: 200

I am going to write about the Komodo dragon. This reptile lives on an island in Indonesia called Komodo. It is the largest lizzard in the world since these "dragons" can grow up to 2,5 meters long including the tail. They look a bit like we imagine dinosaurs.

I've seen them in a zoo, but never in their own habitat. I remember them just siting there and considering you, and not doing anything really interesting. However, I've seen them on nature programs and I've learned some things about them. Actually, these things are kind of terrible, so they're not nice or cute, but they are interesting.

Komodo dragons are predators. They eat animals such as pigs or deer, or people if they can get them. They have a unique and sneaky way to hunt. They just bite their prey and wait. The Komodo's mouth is full of noxious and toxic bacteria (they never brush their teeth). These bacteria then infect the wound of the prey. Soon the prey gets very sick and dies. The Komodo dragon also has an anti-coagulant venom that helps keep the wound from healing so that there is a lot of blood loss. After about a day, the dragon leisurely finds its victim dead or dying and eats it.

They live a pretty long time--about 50 or 60 years. The younger dragons live up in trees when they're smaller, and they depend on smaller prey too. They have to avoid the bigger Komodo dragons because these will eat them. This is also a cannibalistic animal--how nice!

One other noteworthy aspect of this dragon is that it is the only reptile that has exhibited play behavior seen in a zoo. Komodo dragons have been observed playing with balls and other objects. They are considered to be the most intelligent reptile. So, they aren't just killing and eating machines; they do other things too. In reality, being a reptile,  they don't eat too much, just once or twice a month.

The Komodo dragon may seem horrible, but we humans are destroying their habitat. So, who is more horrible?
